3D architectural renderings come as second nature to us, so we often take our knowledge for granted. But to our clients the only part understood is the briefing, the alterations and the final rendered quality. That's fine by us, or we would be be out of a job!

So clients can understand the basic process, and therefore how they can help or where hold-ups exist, we have created this rough 3D rendering guide. Keep in mind, these notes are only for the actual 3D architectural rendering and animation process and not any DVD production, web design, etc.

The process of creating 3D architectural renderings

To simplify the process we have broken the process into sections..

Step 1 - Quoting

  1. Basic plans or design sketches
  2. Your general marketing strategy
  3. Approximate time frames

Once we know what we are up against we will then quote the job.

Step 2 -Gather Info.

We require a certain amount of architectural, design and construction information to get started.
To start work we need the following:

  1. Architectural plans
  2. Design finishes and colors
  3. Interior furniture
  4. Landscaping design

Step 3 - 3D model

We cant decorate a scene until we have a shell to work in. The shell is created from the architectural plans. Once we create the shell we generate a series of 3D pictures for approval and final modification. These pictures are far from being artwork and are purely for checking architectural and structural accuracy.

Step 4 - The Scene

Now the virtual reality magic begins. The shell of the 3D architectural model is colored, textured, landscaped and furnished.
The extent of the 3D scene process includes:

  1. Applying surfaces and textures
  2. Inserting detailed furniture
  3. Inserting all landscaping.
  4. Lighting the 3D scene
  5. Determining the camera angles.

Each of these steps requires a solid technical background and an artistic touch.

Step 5 - Final Delivery

If we are only preparing 3D still images, or what is commonly referred to as just "renderings", then you will receive high resolution images that you may pass to your marketing consultant.

If we are preparing 3D virtual reality animations, or "fly-though" videos, then you have some choices as to how they are delivered.

  1. on DVD
  2. as a web movie
  3. on video tape
  4. on CD
